Negotiating A Lion's Share of Freedom:
I am so impressed when a relatively new author writes such a compelling and intriguing life story, that attracts the reader's attention and keep you guessing until the very end. In reviewing this book, the main criteria include content, organizational thought, and people and culture that assisted the author's journey to survival. Once you start reading the story you will be hooked, followed by an even more unexpected uppercut of an ending! The author had a rich life at the beginning--but he felt compelled to speak out against the government about issues that concerned him--and he joined others to fuel and guide his passion. The author meticulously extends the documentation process to cover the broad spectrum of popular protests involving the whole country. Taken together his experience presents a `holistic' documentation of the multiple layers of Ethiopians' freedom struggle during 1977. Woven into his story is the compelling account of a man on the run to save his life for the principles in which he believes and when you finish reading his conclusions are almost always qualified. He took a harsh journey in ways most of us would never want to experience: like the desert, mountains and valleys, day and night to a destination unknown, and clearly describes places, people, and tradition interwoven with his personal life story. Thus, the book can be an excellent resource for suplemental reading material for students, educators, cultural and geographical enthusiasts. The book is well constructed and meshes well successfully, not only to describe his struggle for freedom, but also providing information about individuals who were propitious in shaping it. Regarding the legacy of the political orderliness, the story covers one of the outstanding accounts of the period that factors into our contemporary understanding of the Ethiopian political struggle. I absolutely loved this book. Once you pick it up, you can't put it down.
